In the last few years my work is concerned with social and personal identities.
Music too, the soundtrack of memory has its place. It often becomes the title of a piece, leading into the work itself.
This may sound indulgent and of course that is a concern. Art has a way of revealing the zeitgeist however and artists must guard their power at all costs.
As I was thinking about this, I read an article in the Guardian by Charlotte Higgins who ends her piece with these words-
“Artists – history tells us- will turn out to be the most creative and subversive documenters of the historical moment, and the nimblest resisters of society’s corruption. “
A big ask but we have to try.
I write I paint I make things including books as a way of responding to the overwhelming chaos of life; putting order back if only for a short time, ironically making more images.
This is the dilemma. How else to express these feelings if not through art?
