Janey Hagger

My studio work revolves around our trepidatious relationship with the natural world; the liminal space that we inhabit between nature and our modern commodified world. Much of the development of pieces involves working outside, close to the subject, presenting a very particular immersive experience. I have also returned to one of my first loves: Life drawing.  Although not overtly present in my studio work, the play of materials and acute observation feeds a wider creative process.

I also work in materials other than paint and drawing.  The past few years I have worked in installation and in ceramics, I also write, but primarily think of myself as a painter.

I have worked in educational environments for much of my career, initially in socially engaged projects in partnership with the Youth Service.  Until 2020 I ran the Outreach department at Central Saint Martins for fifteen years, a role that gave me the opportunity to work with some fantastic artists, designers and students.

When not in the studio, I currently teach on a freelance basis supporting portfolio and studio development and life drawing.
